Services for students with disabilities

Therapies: speech, OT, PT, ABA and more

Educational therapies are the reason many Indianapolis families choose the ESA over the voucher: an approved, licensed provider can be paid from the account, in person or online.

Can an Indiana ESA pay for therapies: speech, ot, pt, aba and more?

In-person and virtual therapies from licensed or accredited practitioners are approved for students with a disability, in line with the IEP, SP, CSEP or ESA service plan.

Education Scholarship Account (ESA)Allowed

In-person and virtual therapies from licensed or accredited practitioners are approved for students with a disability, in line with the IEP, SP, CSEP or ESA service plan.

Choice Scholarship (voucher)Not allowed

The voucher pays tuition only; a Choice school chosen as the special education provider receives separate state special education funding.

SGO scholarshipDepends on the SGO's policy

IDOE lists special education services among SGO-qualified expenses at participating schools.

Which rules apply in 2026-27?

  • Approved therapies include ABA and verbal behavior analysis (BCBA, BCBA-D or BCaBA), speech therapy (licensed SLP; SLP assistants allowed), occupational and physical therapy (licensed; assistants allowed), cognitive behavioral and play therapy, music, art, recreational, equine and vision therapy with the listed credentials.
  • Only students identified with a disability through an Indiana public school evaluation may use ESA funds for therapies; a sibling account cannot.
  • Keep the service plan current: IDOE expects it to be updated when services change or at renewal.

What does the ESA refuse under therapies: speech, ot, pt, aba and more?

The state excludes: fees for late, cancelled or missed appointments; therapies already paid by a school, insurance or medicaid; providers without the listed license or credential.

How does this play out for Indianapolis-area families?

IDOE's August 2026 provider sheet lists 155 business providers (therapy practices and other companies) and 50 individual tutors with addresses in the metro's main towns.
