How much do Indianapolis families pay after the Choice voucher?

Anywhere from nothing to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on tuition and district. Chalkbeat's July 2026 analysis put the median gap at $1,694 for an IPS-area student at voucher schools inside IPS boundaries.

Where tuition is below the district amount, the state pays tuition and the gap is zero; IDOE capped 19,907 awards at tuition in 2025-26.

What fills the gap after the voucher?

In order: an SGO scholarship if the household is within 400% of the lunch-program line, parish or member rates, school need-based aid and, at participating schools, the Edu Fund partner scholarship. From 2027 the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit may add SGO money for families under 300% of area median income.
